Embedded generosity

lunedì, aprile 5th, 2010

Sempre su trendwatching.com viene presentato il trend della generosità incorporata negli atti d’acquisto, ecco alcuni esempi:

- per ogni lampada Sunnan Led di IKEA (alimentata dall’energia solare) venduta, una viene donata all’UNICEF, che la destina a bambini che vivono senza elettricità;

- TOMS Shoes dona un paio di scarpe a un bambino bisognoso ad ogni paio venduto. Fino all’agosto del 2009 TOMS ha donato 150000 paia di scarpe e prevede di arrivare a 1 milione entro il 2012;

Life-Guide for cultural variety

martedì, novembre 18th, 2008

People from a variety of cultural backgrounds have for many years contributed to our society, both in terms of wealth creation and in enhancing the rich cultural fabric of the UK. In recent years, skills shortages and the expansion of the European labour market has lead to an influx of migrant workers. If we are to realise the full potential of their contribution, it is essential that they are given support to become better equipped to adjust to life in this country. Today, many organisations are exploring new ways of providing information, advice and support to non-native English speakers. The Life-Guide is a unique, online resource which allows all organisations to deliver up-to-date information and support on a wide range of topics in any language. It enables pre-determined and translated ‘core content’ to be merged with ‘user-defined content’ and can be downloaded as a complete document either to a desktop printer (for immediate delivery to end user) or as professional ‘printer-ready’ artwork. Ultimately, organisations can deliver a complete and precise support pack tailored to their area or their business, in any language, at the press of a button. More

Future Melbourne

martedì, novembre 18th, 2008

The Future Melbourne wiki is an interactive website where you can comment, discuss and even directly edit the content of the plan. This is a bold innovation in participatory democracy for the people of Melbourne. It is also the first time that a local government has utilised an online collaborative process to develop a shared strategic vision. The opinions and thoughts of the Australian public were gathered and harnessed using wiki technology in order to improve upon the ten year strategic vision plan the government wants to undertake for the city of Melbourne. The wiki allowed registered users to contribute, add or edit to the strategic plan document, which was brought forth by the Future Melbourne panel. This allowed the public to change, comment, discuss or edit the content of the Draft Plan during a time called the public consultation period which lasted from May 17 to June 14th. The public can be harnessed and can have a voice regarding the development of their city, and a wiki is a great tool to use for that purpose. Future city planning using public contribution might want to consider how to get more individual opinions/submissions leading up to the creation of the strategic 10 year vision for Melbourne.  More

WikiCity

martedì, novembre 18th, 2008

In the past decades, real time control systems have been developed in a variety of engineering applications. In so doing, they have dramatically increased the efficiency of systems through energy savings, regulation of the dynamics, increased robustness and disturbance tolerance.
Now: can you have a city that performs as a real time control system? This is the aim of the WikiCity project at MIT. Let’s examine the four key components of a real time control system:  1.entity to be controlled in an environment characterized by uncertainty; 2.sensors able to acquire information about the entity’s state in real-time; 3.intelligence capable of evaluating system performance against desired outcomes; 4.physical actuators able to act upon the system to realize the control strategy.

A city certainly fits the definition of point 1, and point 2 does not seem to pose particular problems. As an example, the Real Time Rome project used cellphones and GPS devices to collect the movement patterns of people and transportation systems, and their spatial and social usage of streets and neighborhoods. But how to actuate the city? Although the city already contains several classes of actuators such as traffic lights and remotely updated street signage, a much more flexible actuator would be the city’s own inhabitants. Consequently, we are creating a new platform for storing and exchanging data which are location and time-sensitive, making them accessible to users through mobile devices, web interfaces and physical interface objects. This platform enables people to become distributed intelligent actuators, which pursue their individual interests in cooperation and competition with others, and thus become prime actors themselves in improving the efficiency of urban system. TecAccess is the leading provider of accessibility and workforce solutions that allow private industry and government to increase market share, efficiency, and productivity by reaching customers and employees with disabilities.  TecAccess is a for-profit firm, though many of her competitors, such as the Job Accommodation Network, are nonprofits. “We didn’t want to be marginalized.We wanted to emphasize that this is good for business.” More
