Crowdsource safety

“For all the billions of dollars (and hours of time) spent on airline safety, the actual take down of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was by people in the plane. It was adjacent people, using common sense and common reactions, that foiled the plan.[...]
Do I really think that civilians should be trained to disarm terrorists in flight? No. But it does seem to me that these passengers are likely one of the best lines of defense. [...]
After Katrina, we understood that what was really needed was existing on-the-ground communications, owned, operated, and understood by regular people [...]“

Driver Behaviour

Driver Impairement

Road Design

Vehicle Design and maintainance

A Freeway Becomes a Farm

mercoledì, marzo 24th, 2010

The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake did serious damage to many of the raised highways in and around San Francisco. For many, the only option was to tear them down—leaving broad areas of urban space that to this day remain unused. Citizens living near one of these areas, however, have transformed the former highway into a farm.

San Francisco plans to develop this lot eventually, probably with mixed housing and greenspace. But a clever new project has been conceived for the interim years: an urban agriculture cooperative called the Hayes Valley Farm. “The Hayes Valley Neighborhood association contacted the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development to ‘activate’ the lots,” says Chris Burley, now the project’s director. Agriculture was the idea that moved everyone. “We’ve all seen the power of gardens to transform a space,” he says.

Strane storie in città

domenica, marzo 14th, 2010

studentgems

domenica, novembre 23rd, 2008

Studentgems.com is where businesses and individuals can find students to get a job done by matching their needs with student skills. The idea for studentgems.com came from working on a project which needed some photography. Commercial costs were too high so we thought we would find a student and pay them instead, also giving them some valuable experience. We found a student who took some stunning photos and she was delighted to earn much more than she would have done in her part-time job as a waitress. Finding her was not easy, if only there was a nationwide student database so everyone could benefit from this fantastic pool of student talent…
Why use studentgems? Students can now use their developing skills to earn at a higher rate (whilst not charging fully qualified professional level fees), as well as doing the usual student jobs. Businesses can make their money go further by using studentgems.com to find a student to do websites, logos, photography, translations, research, admin…and more.

Individuals can benefit too, by having access to services that may previously have been cost prohibitive, eg. illustrating, portrait photography, jewellery design, musicians… the list goes on.

co-op

domenica, novembre 23rd, 2008

CO-OP is a free web app that allows co-workers to stay connected. Stay in tune with your co-workers. Ask questions, share knowledge, track time, and update agendas all in one place: Co-op.  It shows what you are working on, what is our daily agenda, and what we worked on yesterday. In addition to the status updates, and daily agendas, Co-op also offers time tracking.

What are we working on?

Co-op makes it easy to stay connected with your co-workers without disrupting them. Your team can use it to post updates, ask questions, share links, and track time.

What is our agenda today?

Quickly share your daily agenda with your co-workers. Quickly scan your co-workers’ agendas. Then cancel your daily status meetings!

What did we work on yesterday?

As each team member updates status and tracks time, Co-op automatically records the transcript. You can go back in time to see what your team has accomplished each day.

Co-op is a great idea for the workplace so that anyone can view everyone’s status without disrupting anyone or having to leave your desk.

Ravi needs a designer for an hour to complete a small task, but he checks the resourcing spreadsheet and everyone looks booked. Instead of running over to the creative suite and asking around to see who’s currently working on what, Ravi could login to Co-op and glance at the designer’s status messages. In Co-op he can see that Kat is already focused on a project with an end-of-day delivery, while Casey is working on an internal project and appears to have more availability.

Follow Ravi and join in the co-op!
